Fall 2012- a light breeze stirs the otherwise dry Northern California, bringing with it the winds of change. “Just get the call over with.” The always rational Laefe pecked at the peeling plastic on his girl’s desk chair inside their one-bedroom apartment. Sometimes, if Laefe focused hard enough, he could tear off a black flake and hold it in his beak for a split second before it fell onto the rug. After doing this once or twice, he gave up. But, this didn’t stop him from repeating the gesture the next day, just to see if corporeality came while he slept. “Should I sing to them?” TJ turned to her daemon with a glint in her eye as she unplugged her cell phone and pocketed the charger. “Hey I just met you… and this is cra-“
Laefe transformed from white-crowned hornbill to snowy owl in a whirlwind and aimed his yellow burning headlights at her. The predator Laefe silently rose into the air and dived, his talons extended. Laughing, TJ darted out of her emptied room and jumped over her packed bags. She turned to look over her shoulder just as Laefe collided into her. Though she felt nothing, the force of the explosion sent sparks and particles swirling around TJ like a dust devil. Rather quickly, the particles of Laefe bent and reformed into a white-crowned hornbill on the table. “You’re bleeding again,” he stated, head tilted so he could see her around his beak. TJ reflexively touched her forehead and smeared the blood down her cheek. With a breathless sigh, TJ moved into the restroom and folded some toilet paper to clean her face off. The daemon and human didn’t speak, reading each other’s emotions faster than they could communicate verbally. Laefe was worried, TJ was annoyed- switch- Laefe was annoyed that TJ wasn’t worrying and TJ was worried about Laefe’s concern. The silent battle ended with stubborn silence as TJ leaned over the counter to pick at the gash on her forehead. Laefe puffed his feathers in annoyance. “Head wounds bleed more than most,” TJ asserted. “Practitioners don’t encourage driving after a trauma,” Laefe countered. “Laefe, if you can explain to me how I'd calmly detail yesterday's demon attack to a doctor, then I'll talk to one.” TJ added another thin layer of cream to the cut and exhaled heavily through her nose. “Let’s just call Katie and Toby, okay?” Laefe gave her a look that said this conversation wasn't over. “Do you remember their number?”“It was in my old phone, so her number transferred.” TJ eyed her new iPhone with uncertainty and poked at the contacts list. She found Katie’s number and their last texting conversation popped up. The two friends had tried to stay light-hearted, asking about school and families… but their conversations weren’t sustained. The last message was from Katie read: That was back in July on TJ’s birthday. Yet, rereading that last text message gave her the confidence to dial Katie's number. Laefe gave his girl a reassuring nod, even though both were sharing the same thought: this was not going to be a pleasant conversation.

Meanwhile, in Canada~ The day itself was crisp and sharp, autumn just beginning to show its true nature with a biting wind more fitting of winter. Just as the leaves were swept up in sudden gusts, so too was a petite blonde-haired teenager, wrapping her black jacket around her frame as she hurried back from class. "I told you you needed a warmer jacket today." The black-and-white raptor above her goaded, prompting the girl to roll her eyes as she waited by the traffic light. "Oh yeah? Well I bet no one ever told you you were modest." She quipped back, tapping her foot as she waited for the light to turn. It had taken a bit of time to get used to university life, but she'd taken it in stride, easily adjusting to living away from her parents for the first time. Strangely enough, even on a floor with thirty people, it seemed quieter... and she liked it that way. The independence was definitely healthy for her, but she still managed to check into the websites that had carried her through high school periodically. As soon as the light turned, the girl was off, hair whipping around her face as she descended down the hill, down the steps and across the parking lot before digging her residence card out of her pocket with freezing fingers that didn't quite listen to her impulses. Toby, who had perched on the nearby bus shelter, didn't have to make eye contact with her to be sure she knew his judging gaze was upon her. You'd think after having the bird for a few years now, you'd get used to it. But, she reflected as she punched in her floor number on the elevator, Toby perching on the railing inside, there was a lot that they were still finding out about having a daemon. But there was no time for that, or at least it felt like it. Katie had a philosophy short paper due the next week, her politics essay had just been assigned to them, and she'd just gotten a whole new collection of readings for the week to come. Keeping up with the work was a day-to-day struggle, but it left little room for the other drama in her life. Which she was rather grateful for, able to exhale a sigh of relief to find her room devoid of her roommate. "The one thing I wish you'd brought was a kettle." Tobaeryn sighed, beginning to preen his wing from where he had landed on her headboard. "Tea solves just about everything.""Right, I forgot, the incorporeal kite knows everything." Katie teased, happy to be speaking out loud as she tucked her hair behind her ear. Instead of tea, she'd had to settle for a bottle of water that she found in her small fridge, tucked in the corner of her side of the room. Cracking the cap in an easy motion, the girl was about to take a drink when her pocket began vibrating violently. For an instant, she was about to leave it, almost certain that it was no more than a check-in text from her mom. But as soon as the descending chimes began to grow in volume, she quickly put the bottle down, seizing her phone in her other hand just as Valjean began to sing the opening to 'One Day More'. Blinking her brown orbs at the caller display, she flicked her gaze up to Toby's, who'd hopped closer to investigate, before a hundred thoughts ran through her mind. Her mindtwin? Calling her? It wasn't something that happened at all - they usually preferred to text, and even then, it wasn't exactly regular. Sure, she communicated with TJ and Laefe over tumblr, but somehow texting had just never worked for them. At once, the beginnings of concern began to blossom in her chest, Katie biting down on her lip in response. It couldn't mean anything bad, right? Maybe it was just a celebration of a new scholarship, or Laefe had found a new form... She knew she was being ridiculous, but the music building in volume definitely wasn't helping the situation. "You wait any longer, you're not going to be able to find out!" Toby reminded her, and instantly, Katie's thumb swiped across the bar on her iPhone's screen, connecting to the call. "Hello, TJ?" She asked, keeping the concern out of her tone. She'd been wrong before, and would continue to be wrong in her lifetime. This was definitely one of those instances where she was hoping that her instincts would prove false, and her mindtwin really was just calling to be friendly. "What's going on? It's good to hear from you!"

As Laefe had predicted, the sound of her mindtwin's voice eased the anxiety constricting TJ's throat. TJ was surprised to hear an optimistic ring in her tone: "Mindtwin! It's wonderful to hear your voice! We should really do this more often..." TJ had a habit of walking while she spoke on the phone, and she soon found herself pacing around the wooden chest in front of her floral-print couch. Thank goodness phones aren't corded anymore.
Straightforward as ever, Katie didn't let TJ continue with the introductions. It was something TJ usually appreciated, but in this case, she would have preferred to delay the news with some small-talk. She was about to succumb to the temptation, but Laefe gave her a stern look that stopped her.
"Yeah, so..." she swallowed, moving an uncomfortable wad in her throat. "Last night, we ganked a demon." TJ waited for a second before the floodgates opened- "h-he must have followed me to my apartment after I- I left my abnormal psych class at eight. My roommate was at a meeting for work, thank goodness... I almost didn't catch the, uh... smell of sulfur... and I haven't been keeping any salt or holy water around because I don't want to have to explain to M- my roommate... The demon caught me off-guard, I had to tell a pretty elaborate story to explain some of the damage to our apartment. And don't even get me started on what I had to tell the kid he possessed..." TJ switched hands so she could wipe away the perspiration from her right hand on her jeans as she walked.
"I just... I can't put my roommate, or anyone else here, in danger. Katie, he had possessed a student from my psych class. I couldn't live with myself if others got hurt because of Laefe and I. The Trickster was right, we can't live normal lives if our daemons remain corporeal..." TJ licked her dry lips and she felt immediately relieved to finally tell someone the truth. TJ had wanted to blame the demon for the cut on her forehead and bruises on her arms, but instead she blamed the boy who had followed her home from her class. It was the best half-truth TJ could come up with in the sparse minutes before her roommate got back. The story also gave her a good excuse to spontaneously leave her roommate the next day with only a note in her wake. Somewhere in writing she specified that she needed to go to a hospital and talk to a counselor, and that she felt safer doing so in another city. TJ claimed she would be home with her family. While her roommate thought she was home, TJ needed to convince her parents she was still at school. It was a delicate lie with a lot of potential problems, but it was necessary to keep them all safe. On that, Laefe and TJ agreed. In a rare, supportive gesture, Laefe perched on her shoulder and rubbed his beak on her head.
"I'm going to start hunting, and Laefe thinks I'm going to need help," TJ added with a stronger voice. "Don't let her fool you, she will need help," Laefe added with his usual smirk. "All this girl learned during the cerberus crisis was how to make vast quantities of holy water." "Holy water is useful!" she insisted. "For demons... but hunting is going to involve more than demons, hon." "Shut up," she mouthed to her daemon with the glinting eyes.

Raising an eyebrow as her heart continued to beat, Katie gave Toby a quick glance, meeting his red gaze absently as she listened to TJ on the line. She could hear in her mindtwin's tone that something wasn't quite right. Even though they hadn't had nearly enough Skyped conversations, the similarities between the two were eternal, and Katie would be hard to convince this wasn't a courtesy call.
The truth came quickly, something that Katie was grateful for. Neither of them did small-talk, and dancing around the topic wasn't her forte. If the Canadian hadn't been standing already, she would've leapt to her feet, hating to be stationary in times like these. She did rest her palm against the edge of her desk, however, leaning on the structure for support as she drew the air through her nostrils. Everything seemed in hyper-focus right now, everything except for the item she focused her gaze on overly aware of any sudden movements. Toby had snapped his head around to glare at the phone in her hand, remaining perfectly still while his girl began to rub her palm across the edge of the desk.
Listening to TJ recount the story, Katie couldn't keep her heart rate normal, the pounding starting in her rib cage before thundering in her ears. She'd thought... no, she'd been foolish to think that after the last time the TDFers had assembled from demons, they'd be home safe. No, Cereberus was still out there... and demons still found them. Even though she'd been able to do some hunting in the Ontario area where she lived now, it was obvious that they were far from safe now.
"I'm glad you're alright, TJ." She cut in, steadying herself as she did so. "It sounds like you did everything right."
At least that was the silver lining, faint as it was. TJ would've led with it if Laefe had been injured, and if she was well enough to call, she could only hope that she wasn't sporting a more grievous injury without letting her know.
"That's okay. Sometimes we're going to have to lie, it's just the nature of these things." She didn't want to start with a lecture on how TJ should've been carrying salt and holy water - it would do nothing at this point except make Katie feel better, especially if her mindtwin knew where she'd gone wrong. But what the Californian was saying was true, resonating with her as she turned her back to lean on her desk, letting out a sigh as she continued.
Pressing the pads of her thumb and middle finger against her eyelids, the girl rubbed her eyes, the adrenaline still thudding through her bloodstream. She'd tried to juggle it all - classes, friends, and demon-hunting, as many other TDFers had, but it was clear that it simple wasn't going to happen. At least the incident hadn't been more serious, but it was a wake-up call nonetheless.
"I know." She confessed, letting those two words sit in the silence for a few moments. The girl had the urge to start pacing, or run, just do something that didn't keep her trapped, helpless, a country away. Instead, she settled for dragging her fingers through her hair, starting at the crown and working back as the blond tresses fell back to where they'd originally been.
She hadn't expected TJ to start hunting. The spike of shock that ran through her system at those few words instantly birthed a million replies, none of them expressed as she pursed her lips. Even as she heard Laefe cut in, a small smile twitched at the corner of her mouth, but not enough to bring her mood back to anything other than alarmed.
"Mindtwin, I'm sorry this happened. It's shitty, it really is. But you've got to think about this. You know you've been through a lot - it's a shock, but you can't be impulsive like this." Even as the words left her lips, Katie knew TJ was right. Of course, there would be the tendency to overreact during extreme events. But TJ knew just as well as she did that they'd been putting off the inevitable these past few months.
"But you're right." She sighed into the microphone, hand travelling to rub at the back of her neck. She needed an action plan - even though TJ hadn't asked outright, they both knew she didn't need to.
"This isn't going to be easy to organize." Toby murmured, flapping his wings from his perch.
"Tell me something I don't know. But we can't do anything else."
"Mindtwin... can you get to a safe space? I'm going to have to finagle some things, but I'll sort it out. I'm coming with you."

The feeling of relief was short-lived. The liquid fire of guilt clawed its way up TJ's esophagus as the silence on the other end of the line persisted. I shouldn't have called Katie, I should have just dealt with everything myself. TJ sat down heavily on her couch, and the springs beneath her groaned.
She's right, I am being impulsive. Her other hand moved up to her temple where she dug her fingers into her scalp. Some people have it worse, you've got to handle your own problems. All you do is worry other people, and they have their own stuff to worry about. Don't get anyone else involved. What Katie said eventually pulled her out of her thoughts, but also finalized TJ's decision:
"Hold on Katie," TJ's mind worked faster when there was only one conceivable option.
Laefe exploded in an angry cloud of sparkles and reformed into a large maremma sheepdog. His head was squared off at the jaw, golden eyes more wolf-like in nature. Pieces of his white fur floated around him in anger. It was how he looked when he killed the demon yesterday. Laefe hoisted his front paws onto his girl's legs and pinned her down. "TJ stop. If you do this she won't forgive you. You are putting yourself in danger, don't you dare-"
"You're right," TJ straightened in her seat, ignoring her daemon. TJ's eyes glazed over as she stared out the window of her apartment. "I'm being impulsive and irrational... I'll find a safe spot and cool my jets before doing anything else. I'll keep you updated."
Laefe knew where this was going, he growled, loud enough for Katie to hear. "If you hang up on them, so help me I will-" TJ twisted herself around so the cell phone couldn't pick up Laefe's barks of discontent.
"Please, don't come after me. I'll be fine, I'm just going to sort things out myself. Thanks for hearing me out... I'll text you again in a bit." She hung up before Katie could retort.
This decision went against about every safety tip TJ had ever been taught, but she couldn't let Katie fall down with her. She didn't want her mindtwin to lose the life she'd constructed after the cerberus crisis. Perhaps demons were in the United States, but maybe Canada was safe? It was a lousy hope, but something she had to pray for, nonetheless.
"You are being a dramatic teenager- call her back and apologize!"
She had Laefe, a rusty knowledge of Catholicism, and the ability to purchase water and salt. She would be fine hunting solo. She pushed Laefe off her knees and stood up.
"You are making a huge mistake," Laefe warned.
"My first mistake was calling them," TJ deadpanned. "I'll pack up the car."
"A while ago, you made a decision, TJ." Laefe followed her, eyes narrowed as TJ zipped up her bags and grabbed her car keys. "The second you decided to keep me, you gave up this white picket-fence life. I know you are prepared to live with the circumstances of that decision, and I am positive you'll be a great hunter." TJ wasn't expecting this turn in dialogue, she stopped what she was doing and looked at her daemon.
"Where are you going with this?" her eyes darted between his, trying to puzzle out Laefe's logic.
"TJ, you forgot that you weren't the only one who made that decision that day." Laefe stood in front of her, head bowed but his tone was serious. "Both you, Katie, and countless others have put themselves in danger. The demons are going to find them all eventually. If you leave Katie alone in Canada, you are putting her in danger. This doesn't have to be a suicide mission, you both will survive longer as a team."
"But Laefe, I can't make her drop school, leave her family..." TJ's heart hurt at the thought.
"So what are you going to do then, hm? Wait until a demon finds them in Canada?" TJ's mouth dried, and her hands went to worry the zipper on her backpack.
"...You're right," TJ grumbled.
"Usually I am, you're just too stubborn to admit it." Laefe gave her a doggy grin, though it wasn't as carefree as she wish it could be. "Text her, tell her you were having a Winchester moment, and I'll make some room for them in the front seat."
Before she could convince herself otherwise, TJ hugged her daemon. Laefe kept himself in shape for her benefit. "You're going to move to the back seat when Katie and Toby get here." Laefe growled low in his throat and TJ chuckled.

This was all happening way too quickly. Five minutes ago she'd been walking down the road to get back to her dormitory, the worst thing on her mind a paper she had no idea what her thesis was going to be. Now, the entire game had changed, and she had the distinct feeling that she just lost her footing in the worst way possible. Listening to her mindtwin on the other end, Katie's jaw clenched as she heard her emotions change, and her heart fell, dizziness that came from guilt playing at the backs of her eyes.
"TJ, wait-" She tried to cut in, but her friend's distinctively American dialect spoke over her easily. Hearing Laefe's growl, both girl and daemon tensed, the worst case scenario of another attack clear in their mind. But as the time passed, it was clear that the attacks weren't supernatural.
Mindtwin-"
A dead line, and an undeniable searing of guilt left the Canadian where she stood, suddenly feeling very much alone. Tossing her phone onto her red duvet, the girl rested her elbows on her desk, heels of her hands pressed against her eyes before they clasped the back of her neck. "Toby, I fucked it up." She said, the murmuring barely loud enough to hear. For a long moment, she rested there, her chest rising and falling as she struggled to bring herself under control.
The kite, on the other hand, waited only a few heartbeats before hopping onto the desk, inquisitive features only a few inches from her own, and the pair rested there, exchanging breath for a few moments, before a handful of words brought her back to her senses.
"So what are you going to do about it?"
Blinking her brown eyes to red, the mindtwin's features tightened, mirroring her daemon's raptor glare before straightening up, rolling her shoulders back to get some energy back into her body.
"One thing's for sure. We're not listening to her." Cheeky as it was, she knew that there was no way in Hell that she was going to let TJ do this on her own. Sure, she could say that she didn't want her to come down, but it was a whole different ball game if she showed up on her doorstep. Well, in California, at least.
Pacing around the room, the girl quickly grabbed her purple messenger bag, crossing the small distance to stuff some clothes in as Toby watched, tilting his head as he ran scenarios.
"Spontaneous road trip?"
"Not long-term. Parents'll know something's up if I'm not back by Monday."
"Taking a year off to work?"
"Please. They'll never let that happen. Besides, even if it did, they'd tell me to wait until first year is done, or they'd wonder why I wasn't working at home." That was the problem with having involved, reasonable parents, Katie concluded as she finished with her clothes and moved to other necessities. It was much harder to come up with bullshit excuses.
"What if we don't tell them?"
Looking up from where she'd grabbed her jewelry bag, Katie froze, letting the idea sink into her skin. She hated it, and the anxiety she felt at lying to her parents was beginning to bubble up, despite her insisting that 'what they didn't know wouldn't hurt them'.
"It's not ideal, but let's keep it in our back pocket if we need it."
Packing went strangely quickly when she'd whittled it down to the essentials. Well, the essential things she needed to pack, plus whatever she would lose her nut over if her roommate touched/took for her own. The girl packing finished, tossing the phone charger into her bag, looped tightly in itself, before she had the bright idea to call her friend who lived off-campus.
It took a fair bit of creative embellishment, but the girl managed to pack the rest of her belongings quickly and efficiently, her friend willing to store most of her belongings in the spare room of her place. Finally, Katie managed to rearrange her possessions to give the illusion that she still lived there, so as to not worry her roommate (they didn't see each other as it was, anyhow), before grabbing a piece of lined paper and scribbling a note for her.
'Got a job opportunity in BC - I'm flying out tonight to check it out, won't be back for a while.' Vague, but it said everything it needed to. With her laptop, it only took a few seconds to type in "studentuniverse.com" and find the cheapest flight ($352, although she was wincing at the 8.5 hour travel duration). Taking a steady breath, she bought the ticket, heart pounding in her ears as she did so.
"We can just say you bought half a TV with your roommate if they ask." Toby reassured her, before the girl bit her lip, and nodded. Her flight left in three hours - picking up her phone, she called a cab.
It had been no more than an hour since she'd been hung up on by her mindtwin, but already she'd been able to shed the emotions that came with her last call. Soon, she'd be in California (Los Angeles, to be exact - she'd probably have to find a bus to travel across the state), and able to confront the girl and her daemon directly.
Shutting her laptop and stuffing it between clothes and demon-hunting supplies, Katie made a quick rearrangement of her belongings, opting to take her black backpack as well to more evenly spread everything out, with her purse crammed at the top of her backpack. With a wordless thanks that her roommate hadn't barged in at any point, Katie wasted no time slipping on her jacket, giving her room a cursory glance to see if she'd forgotten anything, before closing the door behind her and running to the waiting cab below.
Her speciality was action - she didn't do well with sitting around and waiting much at all. She knew her Mindtwin was going to get to a safe space - she'd just be able to meet her there now. But that didn't mean that she didn't hold Toby close to her, in her lap as a brown-and-black tabby cat, as the car took them speeding towards the airport, heart hammering in her chest.

TJ headed south on the I-5. It was a force of habit. The never-ending California sun was starting to get to her, so she shrugged off her flannel shirt, keeping her right foot steady on the accelerator. "How many times have I been down this road in my life?" she asked Laefe aloud as she tossed the shirt into the back seat. One good thing about being alone in a car was that no one thought you were crazy for talking to yourself. The white dog perked his ears up at being addressed and tilted his head to the side as he calculated.
"Almost fifty, I'd say," Laefe muttered. "Roughly about as many times as we've heard this Peter Gabriel cassette," he grumbled, covering his triangular dog ears with his paws.
"If only the radio stations didn't keep switching on us..." TJ grumbled, checking the time. It was already late afternoon. She hadn't stopped since first setting off. Her car's trunk was surprisingly empty. All she kept was a purse, her backpack, and a black suitcase with some hastily folded clothes. Actually, her backpack was surprisingly light without textbooks or other school supplies. And that's when it hit her. She was a college drop-out. She already didn't like the sound of it, and her parents were going to be pissed if they ever found out... "I think I'm going to get off at the next exit and grab some food. Maybe they'll have a thrift store with some new cassettes."
"Stay in the right lane. Keep going South on the Interstate 5."
"Thank you Siri," TJ passed the interchange that would take her to the coast. It was a tempting thought, but she kept her hands locked straight on the steering wheel. Maybe she could take a detour to Monterey sometime? Monterey beaches weren't those lazy sand bars with the screaming children and the tanning adults. The cool breezes, pine trees, and wicked rocks intimidated most beach-goers. The ocean was at constant war with the coast, as evidenced by the spraying water every time they collided. TJ loved when the ocean was like that- Neptune was a force to be reckoned with.
Issue was, TJ had no idea where Katie was. She hadn't answered her text. But again, TJ, if you had only been less dramatic...
"Stop feeling guilty about it, what's done is done. Now either crank up Red Rain or just think about Mozart. I'm going to milk these last few hours in the front seat."

Waiting for the plane was the hardest part.
With a cup of Tim Horton's tea in one hand (might as well have one last Canadian send-off), the girl tapped her foot nervously, watching the people bustle around the relatively empty airport as the time on her phone ticked by too slowly for her liking. TJ had called her around 6, and it had only taken her a few hours to pack up and send her stuff with her friend, with her plane now leaving at 12. Her arrangements had been relatively simple; she'd reluctantly left her knife in the garbage pail at her residence, knowing that it wouldn't make it over the border, and kept a small satchel of goofer dust buried in some extra socks, with a water bottle of the holy variety, but her supplies were definitely depleted. She hated leaving her supplies in Canada, but on such short notice, there wasn't much she could do. Besides, if she was going to make it out and not get the attention of every Border Control agent between here and LA, she had no choice.
But TJ would most definitely have some hunting supplies, and it wasn't like salt and water was hard to come by, and she was all too aware of America's absence of gun laws, which would actually benefit her, and iron knives weren't that rare. Come to think of it, her supplies were mostly nostalgic - some of it left over from when their daemons had possessed their pets. But the recipes were instinctive by now, and no problem for Katie to come up with on the go, once she'd met up with her mindtwin.
Almost as if she'd heard her thoughts, Katie's gaze flicked down to her now-vibrating phone, and her lip tilted up in a grin as TJ's words appeared on the screen. She didn't know how far Santa Clarita was from LA, but it wouldn't take long to find out.
"What did we do before airport wi-fi?" Toby quipped from her shoulder, red eyes watching as his girl typed onto her phone. "Forty minutes' drive isn't bad."
"Providing we can find a way. We can't exactly hijack a car."
"We'll figure something out. Let's just get on the plane, okay?"
Right. The plane that, as of now, was three hours from takeoff.
The Canadian spent her last remaining hours in Canada writing down the numbers of her fellow TDFers - the numbers she'd gotten from the last time they'd had to assemble, and shooting them all, minus TJ, a quick message.
The other numbers she recorded as well, but kept that directory tucked away without any message - it would be better to leave that world behind cold-turkey. As soon as her photos and notes were backed up onto her laptop, Katie spent the rest of her time listening to the musicals that made her happiest, and as they always did, time seemed to melt along with the notes. And soon enough, she was picking up her bags and finishing the last dregs of her tea before stepping onto the small plane.
"Try to get some sleep. It's not going to be easy once we land." Naturally, Tobaeryn's rundown was a lot more interesting than the standard pre-flight announcements, and not for the first time, Katie was glad she didn't get more than slightly cagey on flights. Her daemon was right, of course - there wouldn't be much more time to sleep until the next night, and jet lag would certainly not favour her. Nestled in her purple hoodie, the girl closed her eyes, Toby settling into her lap as a small tabby cat once more, as she tried to drift off to sleep.
.The LA airport was a lot busier than she'd expected, but she found it no challenge to navigate through the crowds of people. It was more like her home city than her university town, and a slight pang of homesickness began to settle in her stomach.
No time for that. Let's just get to Santa Clarita.
Approaching a 'Travel LA!' booth, the girl adjusted her bag's strap as she stepped up to a teller, the crowd seeming to dissipate around her.
"I need to get to Santa Clarita. Are there any buses that run there?" She asked, aware of Toby scanning the crowds from behind and above her.
"Santa Clarita? What'cha got going on over there?" The teller asked, eyes sparkling from under his baseball cap.
"A none-of-your-business meeting." She snapped, expression darkening a little.
"Tch, a little touchy, are we? Careful who you snap at, you look more like a kid runaway than a big bad city-type."
"I'm not a runaway." It took a moment for her to unclench her hands, which had balled into fists despite herself.
"Aren't you? Dropping out of school, not telling your parents, running to a new country..."
From thirty feet away, Toby nearly dropped out of the sky. Angling his wings in a steep dive, Toby let out a sharp screech as he leapt to her feet, a feral snarl as he morphed into a tiger. "Katie... we know him"
She hadn't noticed it, but the airport had emptied out in a matter of seconds. And now that she was thinking about it... they weren't in the airport at all.
"You certainly don't make things easy for you, do you?" he asked, crossing his arms and regarding her with a cold stare. "You look thirsty. Here, take a drink."
Catching the can of diet Pepsi didn't stop the girl from recognizing his face. "Trickster... What are you doing here?"
"Where is here, again? Should we take a field trip, maybe back home?" And instantly, she was in the downtown core of her home city. With widened eyes, Katie and Toby both snarled as they looked around their city, knowing that it was only an illusion.
"Toby... you've changed since we last met. I seem to remember you a little differently..." he chuckled, and in the next blink of her eyes, he'd shrank down to her own pet's form, the one he'd taken when he first became corporeal.
And he did not take kindly to it.
"What do you want, Trickster. I don't want to play your games." Katie growled herself, brown eyes boring into his.
"Can't two old friends catch up?"
Crossing her arms, Katie just quirked her eyebrow, and all three of them knew she wasn't buying anything.
"Alright, alright. But do you really think you're just going to go hopping on a plane and go have a movie montage with your bestie on the road? It's not going to be like that, girlie. Getting back into the 'family business' isn't like riding a bike... although in your case, that might not be a bad thing."
Rolling her eyes, Katie brushed past the hit at her bicycling skills and frowned. "What's your point?"
"The game's changed now. We're not just talking ghosties and fun furry critters. Winter is coming."
She had to bite her tongue to keep from quipping that it was always sunny in LA.
"I just wanted to give you a heads up. Things are changing, and they will fall. And... well, don't you think you're forgetting something?"
The ground shook around them, dread anchoring Katie's heart to the ground.
"Tick tock, Katie. Time is running out."
Whipping around, her eyes were wide as Toby sprang back as a Black-Winged Kite, wings beating at her head's height as they both heard and felt the thundering just as a colossal being came into sight, jowls and paws flying as he ran towards them, the horrendous shrieking tearing apart her ears as she threw up her arms over her face and the earth fell around her and the hotel came down on top of her-.
The shrieking turned into the whine of the plane's engine as Katie rocketed out of her seat, eyes gaping as her heart pounded in her rib cage. Terror seized her for a moment as she felt the sweat prickle on her neck until finally, the words of the captain announcing their descent into LA became her reality. Toby was in her lap, the tabby cat once more, burying his head into her hands to give her something textile to ground herself here, both seeking comfort the other could provide. Her breathing settled as she met the gaze of those around her who were staring with some surprise, and she rested her head against the back of her seat, letting out a sigh.
"It's not real. It was just a dream." Toby reassured, still kneading her with his paws, as restless as she felt.
"Doesn't mean it wasn't real, and that's what worries me." She thought, barely hearing the captain as he asked her to lift her tray over the intercom, attention only coming back when she noticed her tray was down. If she'd been asleep this entire time, she definitely couldn't have ordered anything...
The diet Pepsi can rested on the tray, positively grinning at her as her blood ran cold. Picking it up, the girl shook it once, shocked to hear a solid clinking against the aluminum. Frowning, she opened the tab easily, feeling the crunch beneath her fingers, and tilting it upside down, felt a slight shock as the piece of metal settled onto her palm, and she pocketed it into her jeans quickly.
There were too many questions running around her mind, and not enough ways to get any answers quickly. Rubbing at her eyes with the heel of her hands, she felt far from rested, and more than a little unsettled. As they landed, it was only 6 AM local time, possibly too early for any buses to Santa Clarita. But she didn't mind taking some extra time to wait - the LAX airport would definitely have overpriced food, clothes, and many vendors selling new phones.
As it turned out, there was a bus that left in an hour and a half (she'd made sure to ask a teller that wasn't a supernatural turd in her books). Katie spent the time between freshening up as best she could in an airport bathroom, finding a very light shirt of red plaid and white tank top to change into, and picked up a few more new clothes, along with a cheap, older version of the iPhone. Finally getting onto the bus, feeling a bit better after stretching from her eight-hour flight, she placed her bags on the outmost side of her seat as close as she could get to the door, taking out her phone as she pressed her back against the window.
Toby, from his perch on the top edge of the seat she occupied, rolled his eyes as he ruffled his feathers.
"Don't make her anxious, just send it!" he berated, a lot less amused than she was at the situation.

The two vibrations from her silent iPhone rattled the table, resulting in a Jurassic Park-style vibration in TJ's glass of water. Laefe, shaped as a maremma sheepdog, was stretched out on the plastic diner bench across from TJ. The diner was all but empty, so the two travelers didn't feel any guilt taking up a booth for themselves. Laefe and she both didn't like the looks of the place... but it was either this, take-out, or a four-star restaurant across the street. TJ wasn't prepared to pay more than ten dollars for soup, and she figured she would tire of fast food soon enough. Her stomach never did well with greasy food anyway.
"That's Katie," Laefe stated, bringing TJ's attention back to her phone. After putting her soup-spoon down, TJ picked up her iPhone and scanned the messages. She blinked and then looked around. There was no one within ear-shot.
"Well, I guess we'll be seeing them sooner than later..." TJ said aloud, frowning at the phone. Then she pushed it over to Laefe. After seeing the text messages, Laefe grumbled.
"The two of you will do well for each other. You're both equal parts impulsive and insane." The dog sighed, obviously done with this whole hunting career before it even began.
"-I just wish she wasn't flying into LAX," TJ continued with a sigh, "it's very crowded and disorienting for a-"
"-would you two like anything for dessert?" the waiter had snuck up on them, pen in hand. TJ smiled with a bit of embarrassment, hoping the waiter hadn't just heard her speaking aloud.
"Actually, could I have the bill? The soup was delicious, thank you." It wasn't the best TJ had ever had, but it had filled her churning stomach with something solid, which she appreciated. The man gave her a devious smile, and tapped the pad of paper with the back of his pen, seeming unwilling to tear off the receipt.
"TJ-" Laefe warned. The low-hanging lights around the diner flickered. Like a dog howls before a storm, Laefe whined in worry. TJ cupped her water glass, dipping the rosary tied around her wrist into the water. The prayer immediately played on her lips.
"You sure your doggy wouldn't like some treats?" the man grinned. TJ's knuckles whitened around the top of her water glass. "You and your friend are gonna need some training if ya wanna grow up to be big bad hunters. That holy water you're brewing isn't going to work on me."
"Trickster," TJ suddenly recognized his voice, hardly as dark and cool as a demon's. "What do you want?" She let go of the water glass and studied his appearance. Same golden hair and bright eyes, but it was his smirk at the mention of his name that she remembered.
"Aw, I can't drop in to see my favorite daemians? No?" TJ blinked. "At least you've got a better attitude than your Canadian pal." TJ perked up and the Trickster sighed. He pocketed the receipt book in his bright orange apron and then nodded at Laefe. "Scoot over pooch, don't you like wings more anyway?" In a snap Laefe was a screaming chicken, and TJ snatched him up and held him quiet to her chest.
"You saw Katie," TJ stated, eyes wide.
"Ah yes, the tiny raptor of a Canadian. She didn't recognize me at first either. It's like you both forgot a night you had with Pamela Anderson!" he leaned back, reclining with a feline's grace. His face was screwed in thought for a second. "I really wish you'd let us call you by your first name- 'TJ' sounds stupid. Eh, I'll come up with a better nickname for you, don't you worry."
"Trickster, why are you here? What did you say to Katie?" The Trickster tapped comically on his chin as though trying to remember their conversation. TJ used the pause to let her brain catch up with her mouth.
"I'll tell you what, Teej" a lollipop appeared in his hand and he rolled it around in his mouth a few times. "Guess my name and I'll tell you why I'm here. We'll make a game out of it." TJ's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but after a few seconds she decided the Trickster wasn't joking.
"Uh...Rumpelstiltskin?" TJ guessed, and Laefe gave a cluck instead of his doggy snort.
"Ha-ha, very funny-" a loud buzzing sound from a gameshow went off from nowhere, startling both TJ and Laefe. "Nope, you have two more guesses."
"Trickster, there are thousands of names, I don't think-"
"-Exactly you aren't thinking." The Trickster scolded, pointing the slobbery lollipop at her from across the table. His golden eyes were piercing. "I've already given you enough hints, you just have to put it all together."
TJ looked at Laefe, nestled in her arms. "Loki?" she guessed.
"Aw, you must have researched me to know that one! I'm glad you hadn't completely forgotten me." The Trickster held his hand to his chest, eyes raised to heaven. "That is one of my names, but, unfortunately, not the one I'm looking for." The buzzer noise echoed in the empty diner, but this time TJ braced herself for it. "Hm... maybe that demon cut your brain a bit when he slashed ya across the noggin. Don't want another Harry Potter around here." Before TJ could back up, the Trickster laid his palm on her forehead. After a couple of seconds of tingling heat, he withdrew. The bandage and cut had disappeared. "I really hate to repeat myself. You already know my name, Teej, it's kinda obvious who I am at this point."
"...you're saying you're the opposite of a demon... that you're an angel," TJ fingered the place where the large gash used to be on her forehead.
"Warmer..." The Trickster chanted.
"You don't think he's Lucifer?" Laefe muttered, "Lucifer was cast from heaven."
"Might be a bit too hot there, Foghorn Leghorn." Laefe scowled.
"He's not Lucifer," TJ agreed, looking at the Trickster with a discerning gaze. "And Michael would never call himself a Trickster."
"I dunno... I am the prettiest angel," the Trickster gloated, batting his eyelashes.
"Gabriel," TJ guessed. "You're the messenger, Gabriel."
"Bingo! And the crowd goes wild!" The sound of thousands of people cheering filled the empty diner, shaking the tables and the low-hanging lamps. TJ winced and the Trickster, Gabriel, slammed his hands on the table to grab her attention. Everything went still. Gabriel's voice switched to serious. "Now listen up, because this is the only time I'm gonna repeat myself."
The world around them started to shift, and TJ instinctually closed her eyes. When the vertigo disappeared, she opened them and found herself standing with Laefe. He was nestled in her arms as a snowshoe hare, the first form he had ever taken. Across from her stood Gabriel, the Trickster. The Trickster redressed himself in a green blazer and a shirt the color of red wine. He wore the same smirk on his face. Everything around them was the way it was when she last saw him, two years ago...
"So TJ, what's it gonna be?" the Trickster echoed the same words. "I can put that annoying thing-" he pointed to Laefe, "-right back where he came from. You can go on to college, get your degree, and be with your family- without ever worrying about those pesky demons or hellhounds or cerberus or anything Supernatural ever again." TJ stood quietly, her eyes downcast. But instead of continuing along the same line, he took a step forward. TJ never noticed he was two inches taller than she, nor did she ever see that his eyes were the color of a brass trumpet. "Or- you can wake up in that diner, a college drop-out, with enough symptoms to diagnose yourself with schizophrenia." TJ swallowed noisily, maybe she shouldn't have eaten anything.
"Gabriel, why are you doing this? Why not just zap Laefe back into my head yourself? I get that you don't want me to continue on this path."
The messenger of God turned around dramatically and walked a couple of steps away from them. "Father says, it will always be their choice," he quoted, then Gabriel looked at her over his shoulder. "I think sometimes... we need another chance to make the right choice."
"I made the right choice the first time," TJ said. "I will always choose to keep Laefe corporeal."
Gabriel sighed, but there was a smile on his face. "I swear, it's like talking to a brick wall." His eyes refocused on hers, that characteristic smirk again pulling at his face. "See ya, lil' moose." He snapped his fingers and everything faded to black.
TJ gasped upon waking and Laefe nosed her hand to assure her of his presence. She was in her car, outside of the diner. On her windshield, secured beneath one of the wipers, was her bill for the soup. After cranking her window down, TJ snatched the paper up and read the penned note at the bottom of the bill:
"Next time, order a dessert." -G
She picked up her phone and checked her text messages. Katie had sent them just five minutes ago. TJ typed quickly:

Curled up on the seat with her legs stretched out, Katie had let her old phone rest on her thigh as she kept one headphone in, closest to the window. Yes, she was being an obnoxious teenager at this point, but in her books, it was much better than having to share with someone else. When the bus finally did get rolling on its way, there were only three other people on, but that suited her just fine. Pulling out her laptop, the girl hooked it up to her new iPhone, synching her music and apps, anything that she wouldn't want to lose when she tossed her current phone into a ditch. When that had been finished, she busied herself with adding the TDFers as contacts, a brief message of "It's Aasyla - Christo, as promised." sent out to all TDFers she wouldn't see in an hour.
Leaning back on the seat, she watched as Toby hopped down onto her backpack, tilting his head at her with an inquisitive stare. "This is quite the adventure."
"You're telling me." Katie replied, happy to have her daemon settle in her lap, running a finger over his grey-capped head as she tried to smile.
"We're going to be fine, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah."
"Tell me you know."
She hadn't forgotten that her daemon's glare could be fierce, even to her, but he was right - she couldn't just brush off what was happening right now. It would catch up sooner or later... and it was better to deal with this now, while TJ and Laefe weren't here to see it.
Taking a deep breath, she nodded, closing her eyes for a moment.
"I know."
Getting the text from TJ, Katie hoped that the motel wouldn't be terribly far from the bus stop - there was only so much travelling she could do in a day, and she was reaching that limit.
As the bus continued rolling across the state, Katie put her various electronics away once they were set up, the girl putting her phone case on the phone she'd bought here, and plugging in her headphones to test everything out. So far so good, but she'd miss her old phone, and definitely felt the beginnings of guilt playing at her mind. But, as she deleted all of the social media apps from her phone (goodbye facebook, goodbye twitter) as well as any other apps that could potentially track her location, she had to compartmentalize those feelings. She was doing this for her family's safety - maybe that was part of what growing up was about.
When all that had finished, the girl stretched out her back, feeling more than a little stiff from sitting for this long (she was a Dr Seuss novel - taxi, plane, bus...). But there was nothing left for it except to take out the small piece of metal that the Trickster had passed on, and she did, feeling the slight tingle of electricity across her hand once more, and a slight shock ran down her back.
"Why in a Pepsi can? We don't even drink the stuff!"
"Diet Pepsi, no less. Think he's telling us something?" She joked, grinning lightly at her daemon, who didn't quite find that as amusing as she did.
"I don't think he's quite concerned with size. I'm more worried about what we don't know." For a moment, Toby's head flipped around, scanning the rest of the bus. No one was in the line of sight, minus the bus driver, and Toby was shielded by the seat in front of them. "I want to try picking it up."
Raising an eyebrow, Katie's gaze flicked despite knowing her daemon had already determined that there was no risk to it. "Are you crazy? You can barely manage moving dust mites, let alone a piece of metal."
"Not true, and you know it. I just get a feeling that this is going to work."
"Birdbrain." Katie rolled her eyes as Tobaeryn hopped towards her extended hand, one foot curled up and ready to grasp. "On my count. One... Two..."
By the time he'd counted to three, Katie's other hand was gripped in a tight fist, tense for no reason, until his talon connected with the metal. Suddenly, a lance of pain travelled down Katie's back, across a two-inch strip of skin, tingling and electric and burning until Toby pulled away, both eyes wide.
They didn't have to say it aloud, as Katie pocketed the piece of metal. Somehow... this had to do with Hellhounds.
When Cereberus had first been summoned by the Man in Black, the daemians had been there to watch helplessly as Hellhounds leapt from behind them, spikes from their skin cutting into some unlucky kids - herself included. The infernal creatures had bounded off into the night after their mother... but the mark remained all too well.
The rest of the journey was spent in silence, the girl trying to focus on being excited to meet her Mindtwin at long last. At least that was a silver lining to all of this - that their communication would no longer be limited to too-long PMs over TDF. And, though of course she had her ever-present bird-soul at her side, she was still very aware that the number of people who could share what she was going through was very, very small. Conversing with her mindtwin had always made her feel much less alone no matter where she was - Katie knew that the company would be good for both of them.
Finally, the bus pulled up into Santa Clarita, with Katie positively shifting in her seat. She hated being cooped up for too long, and going on ten hours on transit was definitely not her cup of tea. Stretching around, she waited until everyone else had left the bus before picking up her own belonging and turning to the bus driver.
"How can I get to Santa Clarita motel?"
Raising an eyebrow, the driver pointed forward into the busy city. "Three blocks thataway, two to your left."
"Thanks. Have a good day." She replied, happily surprised by how close she was to the motel. Stepping off the bus, the Canadian breathed in the Californian air, letting the warmth seep into her skin as a sharp contrast to the frigid autumn she'd left behind a matter of hours ago.
"Well, it's certainly nice." Toby commented, stretching his wings as he took off to the skies, the pair of them enjoying the change of setting despite themselves. But it didn't take long for Katie to find a relatively quiet corner to shoot off a quick message to TJ before continuing to walk down the road to the motel, with Toby scouting above her.

Sometimes TJ thanked the Lord other people couldn't see Laefe. Or... should she thank Gabriel? She hadn't had enough time to question her deities since she met with the archangel.
Anyway, Laefe decided it would be a wonderful time to explore all the forms he's ever taken. Perhaps it was because the Trickster forced him into the "disgusting, pea-brained, useless" chicken form and he wanted to redeem himself. Or, perhaps the switch to snowshoe hare brought up nostalgic form feelings. Whatever the reason, the entryway of the two star motel became a stage and Laefe was the one-act performance only TJ had paid for.
"Ah yes, and then there was your ever-so-creative-phase..." he transformed into the perfect replica of her favorite Pokemon, Charmander, a bright orange lizard with blue eyes and four tiny teeth. Blinking large anime eyes he grasped onto his tail and then exploded into a flame of sparkles, reforming into a bright yellow eyelash viper on her shoulder. "Hmm... this form was too sssssensitive for you," he whispered into her right ear. TJ tried her best not to smile like a dork. Unfortunately, the woman in front of them wasn't winning TJ's attention. She was still trying to find her room cardkey, and she had spilled all of her bags over the receptionists countertop in an attempt to locate it.
"Laefe, just pick a form and stick to it, you're giving me a headache," TJ emphasized her point with a mental grumble.
Laefe frowned in snake-form. "You are obviously not as patient as the eyelash viper... who can spend days in trees waiting for their prey." He reformed into the white-crowned hornbill with the obligatory fanfare of sparks and lights. "Do you think this is a good first-impression form?"
TJ sighed aloud, and then sent an apologetic glance to the woman in front of her, who had obviously heard- given the dirty look she had just sent their way. "Yes your majesty, I'm sure Toby will find your appearance pleasing. Are you in love with him or something?" TJ's pocket vibrated, indicating a new text message.
"The bond between a king and his royal subject is too complicated for a commoner to understand," Laefe declared, gripping her shirt with his talons. "Do you think we should tell that woman that her cardkey is in her back pocket?" TJ immediately focused, and, sure enough, she could see the perfect rectangular outline through the woman's tight jeans.
"How long have you known that?" TJ asked, squinting her eyes.
"I like watching the simple humans suffer..." Laefe responded with a cackle.
"Excuse me ma'am?" TJ tapped her shoulder, and the woman turned around. "I think your cardkey might be in your back pocket."
"Are you kidding me?!" she felt her pocket and groaned aloud. Without thanking her, the woman gave it to the receptionist and repacked her purse, including the used gum wrappers and expired coupons. After snatching up her receipt, the woman hoisted all of her bags back onto her stout form and shuffled away.
"How can I help you miss?" the receptionist's thick hispanic accent reminded TJ she was in Southern California.
"A standard double for two nights, if there is one available," TJ pulled her cards out of her pocket as the man clicked through his ancient desktop.
"Two nights?" he repeated. "It'll be thirty one dollars a night, can I see your ID?" TJ handed him her driver's license as Laefe preened his feathers. After typing in some information and asking about her car's model and color, he butchered her last name and gave her the card key in an envelope.
"Could I have another card key for my friend? She'll be coming in later." The man scanned another one and crammed both into a tiny paper envelope.
"Room 134, it's on the ground floor, beneath the stairs." TJ didn't like the thought of sleeping close to the potentially high-traffic stairs, but figured it was the best they could do for last-notice. She thanked him and went outside to check her phone.
TJ showed the text message to Laefe. "That was quick," she mumbled to him and typed a response.
"Are you ready to see Toby?"
Laefe shook himself out and raised his white crown feathers. "I was born ready..." he smirked.

The warm breeze was sweeping across her skin in the most reassuring way, and for a moment, if she closed her eyes, Katie could be reminded of South Carolina. Her family's regular haunt for March Break, she'd missed out on the last trip down there because of her obligations to university, but that expanse of beach, ocean, and warm breezes had been something of a paradise for her. Of course, she'd always love the colder weather as well, as March hadn't brought the warmest weather South Carolina had seen, but being in a similar place reassured her nonetheless, even if California and South Carolina were on different parts of the country. Even so, American geography hadn't been something that Canadian students had learned about in any great depth - but she had the sneaking suspicion that she'd get the chance to learn it very well.
"Keep going after this light, okay?' Toby called down from a few feet above her, the kite scanning the skies for both navigation purposes and for anything supernatural. Having the eyes in the sky gave Katie the ability to focus on her own thoughts, even if she was constantly rearranging her blonde hair as it got tossed around by the breeze. Even though her bags were decently heavy, she was more than happy to have the chance to stretch her legs and get moving after spending all that time stationary. While waiting at one of the stoplights, Katie finally felt her phone buzz against her thigh from where it sat in her jean pocket, and took it out, scanning the message as Tobaeryn perched on the nearby phone line.
"At least we're close." Katie thought to her daemon, who silently agreed as he whizzed by her head, diving to bring her attention back to the changed light. Having grown up in one of the busier Canadian cities, the girl was well-adapted to texting while walking, and was more than able to tap out a few quick words to her mindtwin.
Her thoughts were relatively vacant for the rest of the walk, both daemian and daemon's mood primarily positive despite the knowledge of what they'd had to give up just overnight. As far as they were concerned, that was an issue she'd have to deal with later - and she would be sure to send a few emails every so often to her family to make sure they knew she was alright. But for now... she couldn't worry about it.
"Looks like the motel to me." The kite signalled, the girl watching the black-and-white bird soar off to the side, following his path to the motel before he circled over her, once, twice, three times before he spoke.
"Well, don't just stand there grinning - there is a door you have to go through, you know!"
And in the next minute, the Canadian stepped through the lobby to the motel, brown eyes searching the crowd as Toby flew in ahead of her, finally making eye contact as her lips split into a smile, her words containing the indomitable excitement she felt.
"Hey, TJ."

In life we force ourselves to smile, even when it doesn't feel right. That's why it's such a beautiful thing to feel that natural smile forming our features. TJ felt this way when she met the eyes of her mindtwin across the room. Though Laefe might have preferred a more dignified response to Katie's greeting, TJ couldn't hold herself back. In a few strides the distance between them closed and she pulled her mindtwin into a hug. "I am so happy to see you," she said breathlessly, her eyes shutting while she gave her Canadian friend a tight squeeze. When TJ left her family for college, there was this indescribable, persistent feeling of emptiness. TJ thought this sensation would only disappear when she was around her family. But it was filled the second she hugged her mindtwin, the Canadian girl with the raptor daemon. The only conclusion TJ could make was that Katie was a part of her family. TJ came back to herself when Laefe reminded her: "hon, some people don't like sudden hugs or public displays of affection...". TJ backed up and immediately apologized. "Oh shoot! I'm really sorry... it's uh... I guess I needed a hug. I will ask next time, promise..." But all embarrassment was soon forgotten. TJ was bouncing, little waves of excitement passing through her body like electrical current. She was looking at her mindtwin and saw the little red blood vessels around her eyes. "Want to go into the room? It's a lot more private..."
With her agreement, the two went out the front doors and skirted around the side of the complex. Laefe and Toby were already flying side-by-side effortlessly. TJ used the keycard and pushed the door aside so her mindtwin could go in first. Upon opening the door, to the immediate right was a microwave and fridge stacked on top of each other. TJ immediately recalled her days in a dorm... that's one thing she definitely wouldn't miss. There was a window alongside that door, that TJ had covered so that no one could look inside. They couldn't walk too far forward without bumping into the stand that supported a television and doubled as a desk. On the opposite end of the room was a small bathroom. There was also a doorless closet on off to the side. The room was dominated by the two queen-sized beds, both with checkered comforters and the classic scratchy white bedsheets. Of course they were burnt orange- TJ's least favorite color.
"Sorry about the decor," TJ chuckled as she entered the room and sat on the bed closest to the window. Ever since she was little, she preferred her bed closer to the window. TJ gave herself a quick look in the mirror by the desk and grimaced at her appearance. Dark eye circles were her trademark, but they almost looked bruised from the long hours on the road. After combing back her hair with her hand in a swoop, she faced her mindtwin again. Laefe, who had been chatting silently with Toby since they caught up, flew over to TJ and sat on her shoulder. "Remember to mention this whole Gabriel scenario... you shouldn't be holding secrets from them. We want this hunting partnership to work, remember?""So uh..." TJ started, scratching the back of her head awkwardly, "how was your flight?" Laefe sighed aloud. (Look at the room in panoramic view! Bedroom 6)

The hug was neither expected nor unwelcome, and the shorter of the Mindtwins wrapped her arms around the American, enjoying the contact for the moment. For a while she could forget that everything was so far from okay that it would be laughable, and just enjoy the fact that finally, the two had met. Breathing in the sense of security, Katie remained as long as TJ did, sensing that Toby had perched on a nearby bag-cart, something resembling a soft crinkling around his eyes as he watched the girls, then turning his red gaze to his best friend. "Always a pleasure, Laefe." he said, voice low and, for once, even friendly.
The girl laughed as TJ pulled away, shaking her head as her lips curled into a smile. "It's okay! You don't need to ask." With someone as familiar to her as her Mindtwin, it seemed almost silly to start at square one. But she did appreciate the consideration. Watching TJ's excitement was contagious, and sooner than she expected, she didn't have to force the smile onto her features, letting herself relax minutely. She hadn't forgotten why she'd rushed down, after all, but a quick glance over her friend didn't produce any visible injuries.
Adjusting her bag, Katie nodded, letting TJ lead the way to where they'd set up camp. Watching the two daemons synchronize so quickly helped to set Katie further at ease, the girls mirroring their birds as they walked through the complex. Walking through the door, Katie had to shuffle around the desk much less gracefully than her daemon did, but set her bags at the foot of the bed farthest from the door before she'd seen her mindtwin take the other, quirking a grin at how well they cooperated.
Pulling the desk chair over to TJ's bed, Katie gathered her legs under her, leaning on the armrest as Toby took the back of the chair, beginning to preen the feathers on his wings, flecks of silver light flashing as his beak moved. Raising an amused eyebrow at the small talk, Katie shifted in her seat, Toby stilling as the thought back to her dream on the plane was enough to send a cold shot of ice down her spine. Pausing before she spoke, the girl reached into her pocket, pulling out the small piece of metal - proof enough that the dream had actually happened.
"Not... as long as we'd expected." She began hesitantly, before Toby straightened up, preening over for now.
"I hate to leap into business, but the Trickster paid us a visit.'
